Valentine's Day at Darby

Valentine’s Day is the day when couples express their affection with gifts and greetings to each other, and it is on February 14th! This holiday is when candy and gifts are exchanged, and love is everywhere. Many people seem to hate Valentine’s Day, and many people seem to love the holiday.

My favorite part of the holiday was in elementary school when everyone got to bring in their own boxes and decorate them how they wanted to, then would pass out candy to everyone with their names on it. We got to eat candy all day and be with some of our closest friends. Sadly, through middle school and high school, that stops happening. In previous years, Darby’s freshman cabinet has done things called grams, where you pay $1, and you can deliver to your friends a sweet note with a piece of candy saying how much you appreciate someone.

This year Freshman Cabinet will be doing cupcake decorating during lunches, where you pay $1 and get to decorate your own cupcake! Sophomore Cabinet is also doing a spirit week leading up to Valentine’s Day, as well as the student staff basketball game happening before Presidents Day weekend. Junior Cabinet will also be selling chocolate-covered strawberries during lunches on Valentine’s Day as well!

I asked a couple of students at Darby their opinions on Valentine’s Day and how they feel about the holiday. I first interviewed senior Gianna Smith. How do you feel about Valentine’s Day? “I love Valentine’s Day because I get and give gifts to other people, and I love the fashion of it because people wear red.” What’s your favorite part of Valentine’s Day? “Every year, I make a heart-shaped cake and decorate it all cute as a yearly Valentine’s day tradition.”

I next asked sophomore Esha Siddavarapo her opinions on Valentine’s Day, and she said, “ I think it’s kinda pointless because why would you devote one day of love when it should be every day.” Do you do anything with friends or family on Valentine's Day? “Yes, this year I’m doing a Valentine's Day-themed party with my friends!”

Overall, Valentine’s Day is the day of love, but not everyone feels the same way about the holiday.
