Mother’s Day is an annually occurring celebration taking place on the second Sunday of May, which fell on May 8th this year. This became official in 1914 when U.S President Woodrow Wilson signed the degree. However, the U.S Congress has not established this as an official holiday, but being on a weekend makes Mother’s Day easier for people to celebrate.
At Darby High School, students choose to celebrate their mothers in various ways. Senior, Marty Jayjon, planned a special outing with their mom over the summer. Marty explains, “This summer I am taking her to the North Market and we’re going to eat a bunch of Polish dishes because her grandmother was Polish, so it would mean a lot to her.”
Junior, Morgan Baker, also tried to make Mother’s Day personalized by making her mother a homemade card. She describes her Mother’s Day, saying, “We also had family over and that was really fun, and we ate dinner and played games.”
Mother’s Day was originally founded by Anna Jarvis, daughter of social activist Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis. Ann Jarvis sought to provide assistance and education to families during the Civil War era. She also organized clubs to raise money in order to hire women to work for families where the mother was suffering from health issues. After her passing in May of 1905, her daughter, Anna Jarvis, spoke out for a day honoring the sacrifices mothers make for their children. Thus, Mother’s Day came to be.
Morgan believes that the celebration of Mother’s Day is super important. She explains, “I think mothers everywhere should have a day for themselves because they do so much for us every other day.”
Marty explains why the celebration of Mother’s Day is important to them, saying, “My mom has done a lot for me. I didn’t realize it until I got older, but she has had to work so hard as a single mother for years. Now that I am older, I can finally show her how much I appreciate everything she has done for me.”
Overall, Mother’s Day is a heartwarming celebration to honor moms all around the world. It is a wonderful day to show your appreciation, and a reminder of all the amazing things mothers do.
