Dating in High School

Written by Taylor and Kennedy Gyurko

Having a romantic relationship in high school has its pros and cons. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, we interviewed someone with dating experience in high school to learn more about their thoughts and feelings on the subject.

The person we interviewed is who we call the love expert, they have wished to remain anonymous. Although they’re just a freshman, they are wise beyond their years. They told us all about their high school relationship and their thoughts on it, as well as giving advice to others.

Our anonymous source started off by saying, “I have been in a relationship in high school. It was definitely new to me and I did enjoy being in one, but the relationship wasn’t always the healthiest making it hard. I am no longer in this relationship because of the toxic things that came up while dating, but I’m glad I got to experience it with that person.”

When asked about their feelings on whether or not it is good to date while still in high school they said, “I do recommend being in a relationship in high school because it’s a great time to be able to find your person.” This time is definitely a good time to experience dating, because you’re meeting a lot of new people and having new connections. But it is also important to focus on yourself and to grow in personal ways, too.

We finally asked our source to give us some advice about dating in high school. They said, “Some advice will be to never fall in love with someone who doesn’t deserve or treat you as you feel you should be treated. Also be there for that person and be sure to communicate through anything. If something in your relationship gets hard, it’s okay to do what’s best for your mental health and well being.” This is very wise advice from our interviewee that pretty much anyone can benefit from hearing.

Although it’s not the right choice for everybody, dating in high school can be a positive learning experience for many people. It is very important, however, to make sure that you have healthy relationships and always take care of yourself first.
