The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and many people around Darby are getting together to spread awareness! Junior class cabinet is selling breast cancer awareness shirts during each lunch period for $10 for the pink out game on October 7th!
Many clubs are starting up again for the school year including Key Club! The Key Club will be having its second meeting of the year on Tuesday, October 4th and will be making pink ribbons for Breast cancer awareness month.
I interviewed a 4-year member and Public Relations manager, Bianca Sofariu, and asked her about her role within Key Club.“I have been in Key Club since my freshman year. This year, I serve as the public relations manager. I handle the communication with members, for example, I send out announcements with events and reminders for meetings. I help Alina Khan, the president, in any way she needs. Our board leads the meetings together and I love how well we work together.”
Bianca explained why Key Club makes the pins every year saying, “We have been making them for years now. They are easy to make which is a great first service project for the club. It makes me happy to see them on backpacks throughout the school because I know we are spreading awareness. People think they are a cute accessory to add to backpacks but have the deep meaning as well which is why they are successful. Also, the money we make goes to the Susan G. Komen foundation which is a breast cancer organization and allows us to further support the cause.”
So many new faces and many people from different grades have joined Key Club this year and it’s looking amazing! During the meeting, the office board started off by offering many volunteering opportunities happening this year and going over what big projects Key Club does and has to offer. Once the board had finished their presentation we all moved to the commons to get started on making posters and ribbons. There were two separate tables and groups doing different things, one making the posters about advertising the ribbons and the other cutting and making the ribbons. Key Club made over 272 ribbons with the help of everyone! Key Club will be selling the Breast cancer awareness pins for $1 each the week of October 10-14 at all lunch periods! The Month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and Key Club is helping to spread awareness!
